The Most Interesting Scene in Spectacular Spiderman

The Scene
So theres this scene in Spectacular Spiderman S1 E12 that had stuck with me for a while.
Basically, Peters kind going through it cuz his Aunts in the hospital and he can't afford her medical bills (and also because he's got an alien amplifying his negative emotions). Because of this he lashes out on all of his friends and Flash visits him at the hospital to give him a reality check.
Its a pretty standard idea, Peter's so far gone that it takes hearing from his bully that he's being a jerk for it to really sink in. However, theres something Flash says when he meets Peter and the hospital that I think is the most revealing thing about their relationship.
S1 E12 | Intervention Transcript
Peter -
Don't push me, Eugene. I'm not in the mood.
Flash -
Yeah, yeah. Your aunt's sick.
Poor Puny Parker.
Even Sally feels bad for you. But not me.
If you're hanging up on the she-geek, *that proves you're still a stuck-up egghead.*
A guy who can't even see when his friends are trying to help.
Now theres alot I think is being revealed in this short monologue but I want to focus on this part.
"that proves you're still a stuck-up egghead."
Whenever I had watched this scene this line had never made sense to me. A line like that describes someone whos very intelligent and uses that as a way to put down others and act superior. However, this doesnt really describe Peter at all. He's never really been one to boast about his intelligence or put people down for their lack thereof. When he's tutoring Liz, he seems very invested in getting her to love science as much as he does.
So why does Flash view him this way?
Who is Flash Thompson (Earth-26496)
I assume anyone reading this has a basic understanding of Spiderman media even if they haven't watched this show. (I'd say give it a shot, its pretty good and not that long. You could probably finish it over a weekend.)
Flash typically isn't that complex, he's Peters High School bully. In this show however, they add a detail that he and Peter used to be childhood friends but at some point drifted apart. This adds a new dimension to their dynamic. Instead of just being some random nerd Flash picks on for kicks, Peter is someone he has history with.
Flash is a guy who used to have a friend that he drifted apart from and then decided to bully. And one day when he sees his former friend at his lowest moment, lashing out at his friends, he makes the decision to intervene. Flash finds the hospital his friends aunt is located and waits in the lobby just so he could talk to him. When he finally does, he belittles his friends pain and asserts that he has no sympathy for Peter because he thinks Peter is a jerk. Not only that, he thinks Peter's always been a jerk.
And I find that so fascinating.
Flash is a bully, he really has no high ground in terms of criticizing Peters character. He stuffs Peter in lockers, throws water balloons at him, and steals his shoes, seemingly just for the kick of it. And he also thinks that the person he's bullying on a regular basis is a stuck up jerk.
Despite this he still makes the effort to tell him off for his poor behavior because, even if he thinks Peter's a jerk, its still the right think to do. He may say he doesn't have any sympathy for Peter but he still made it there. The fact that he's there is proof enough that he cares. Instead of just sitting back and watching Peter blow his life up, he tries to set him right.
Thats when I realized something. Flash thinks he's punching up. Even though he is demonstrably not punching up, he thinks he is, and I think that says so much about his character. His friends presumably just bully Peter because they think its funny but its personal for Flash. He thinks Peter needs to be knocked down a peg. Even the intervention is just another example of Flash bringing Peter down to earth.
But why does Flash feel this way? What happens between 2 people that causes someone to bully their former friend and genuinely think they deserve it?
It was this question that led me down a long a long rabbit hole looking at all their interactions in the show.
Whats happened between Flash (Earth-26496) and Peter (Earth-26496)
The show never really gets around to explaining what happened because it got cancelled but theres still clues in the show.
S2E5 is the episode we find out that Flash and Peter used to be childhood friends. Flash's mom invites Peter to his birthday party because as she understands it Peter is still his best friend. Embarassed Flash asserts that they havent been friends since nursery school when they were 4.
In it we also learn in the episode that:
- Peter and Flash used to be best friends in nursery school when they were 4
- They live only a couple houses apart from eachother
- Flash's Mom knows Peter's since she sent him a letter to Flash's birthday party so its likely they spent time at each others houses
- Peter gave Flash his nickname as a joke because he used to streak as a kid
- Flash has inexplicably kept using the nickname Peter gave him ever since, well aware of its origin as an insult
According to Flash they havent been friends since they were 4 but this seems unlikely for a couple reasons
- Flash and Peter are High School Juniors meaning they're about 16-17 years old. Flash's mom may be clueless but it seems unlikely that she would still believe they were best friends if they really hadn't hung out for over a decade.
- When Peter does his birthday video message for Flash he says this. "Sure, we've known each other since we were kids. We were like best friends or something. I guess people change." These words indicate a feeling of betrayal that would make alot more sense if they stopped being friends when they were older
- Flash is clearly under alot of peer pressure when he makes his statement. Flash's mom reveals that they were friends in the middle of his party and it shocks everyone. Even one of his closest friends, Sally, starts taking shots at him. It just makes more sense to believe that he's lying to distance himself from Peter.
- Lastly there is the fact I've been reiterating that Flash views Peter as stuck-up. That indicates to me a form of interpersonal dysfunction thats fitting for people who are older than 4.
I think Flash and Peter were probably friends for much longer than Flash would like to admit. I'd say they probably stopped being friends sometime in Middle School.
But Why did they stop being friends?
You'd probably just assume they just drifted apart as their interests in sports and science pushed them into different social circles. Based on what Peter says in the video message, it seems he believes that Flash ditched him for cooler friends. Thats probably what I would assume happened as well were it not for the fact Flash's words during Intervention. In it he speaks to Peter as if he already has experience with Peters bad attitude. The fact that Peter was at the time influenced by the symbiote doesnt alarm him at all. Flash says hes "still" acting stuck-up despite the show giving us no evidence that he acts this way when hes not under the symbiotes influence.
In my mind this incongruity can only really be explained in one way I think that Flash has a profound level of insecurity with regard to Peter and thats why they stopped being friends
Flash's (Earth-26496) Inferiority Complex (WIP)
Its possible that as Peter and Flash got older and Peter's intelligence got more and more obvious that he started to feel inferior and disconnected from him.
Theres a couple scenes in the show support this view
For example
- in S1E2 after seeing Peter get an A+ on his test he lashes out and tries to hit him with a football
- in Gangland Flash asks Peter for help again so he doesnt say anything stupid on his date with Sha Shan. Peter also insults Flash's intelligence and Flash is very frustrated by it.
- (... Under Construction...)
Now if you've watched the show you might notice that Peter already has this kind of dynamic with another character on the show.
Harry Osborne (Earth-26496)
Harry is Peters best friend and their dynamic is also defined by Harrys inferiority complex towards Peter. In Harry's eyes, Peter is simply better than him. He's smarter than him, even revealed to be more athletic. Its assumed they became friends because of a shared struggle of being losers, but its clear to Harry that Peter isnt a loser. Peter is the smartest guy in school, somehow he's great at football, he's popular with multiple girls, the girl he likes is in love with Peter, even his own father likes peter more than him.
And when you consider the ways that Harry falls apart when he compares himself to Peter its easy to see how Flash may have as well. All Harry has over Peter is money and when given the opportunity Harry flaunts it as a way to get into the popular crowd. Flash similarly had sports. He may not be as smart as Peter but he's a great football player, something that gives him lots of social capital. When Peter and Harry try out for Football and Peter does surprisingly well, Flash comments that "The geeks are inheriting the earth". This is also a line that I think is revealing. Sports is his thing. The idea that Peter could also do what he does is uncomfortable to him. While this is obviously a joke it does parallel what Harry says in the next scene quite closely
Harry - You didn't even want to try out.
Peter - Yeah. Who knew?
Harry -
This was my dream, Pete.
You're already the smartest kid in school.
You really need this too?
Conclusion
so yeah, I didnt really have a point with all this I just thought it was neat.
Stuff I might include
Eddie Brock (Earth-26496) (WIP)
Eddie is also Peters childhood friend. They're so close they consider eachother brothers and and when they still went to high school together he protected Peter from Flash.
Eddie is basically like Flash and Peter combined. He was a quarterback and presumably popular considering Flash looks up to him. But he's also got an interest in Science just like Peter and thats likely what they connected on as they were growing up.
Sha Shan (Earth-26496) (WIP)
Sha Shan is a smart girl that Flash is interested in, but he's insecure because he thinks he's too dumb to be with her
